Rule of Thirds Poster Analysis

This image illustrates the importance of the rule of thirds. The rule of thirds is a powerful compositional technique that outlines the most important topic in the film. The rule of thirds means if you were to divide a poster into thirds using lines, you'd find, where those lines crossed, points that the eye is naturally attracted to, making the poster more exciting and pleasing to the eye. You'd also see that the top of the centre of the poster is where your eye looks to, and that is where the most crucial thing about the poster is placed. In this case, the landscape curves in towards the man which is the main focus, which shows that he is stuck, and the audience can get the idea what the film is about. The lighting in this poster starts off darkest at the bottom and gets brighter the further you go up towards the man. This leads the audience to the main focal point and that is where the eye is most attracted to. In this poster, there is only one actor, which shows that he is the main character. Everything in the poster is leading towards the man, which makes the audience look at him. This is the rule of thirds.
 The rule of thirds is used here as the poster has done a close up of the main character in the key areas of the poster (left centre). There is also another character next to him, however because he's on the right side and slightly behind him, it shows that he's the second most important character. This tells the audience that the character on the right side of the poster is an assistant to the other character. The dark colours in the background leads to the brightness of the faces of the characters which shows the character's importance. They're both wearing suits which shows that they have an important job. They're also both wearing glasses which shows that they can't shows facial expressions in their job. The glasses also reflect a city which shows the audience where the film may be set. Both actors have the same facial expressions which tells the audience they work as a team, and they both have the same prop in their mouth.


 The rule of thirds is used here as the character's face is placed in the area where our eye is most attracted to (top centre). This tells the audience he's the main character in the film. The background shows that there's action in the film and it leads to the character. He's placed near the fire, which shows that he may have caused it. The character's facial expression tells us that it's a comedy as well as an action film because he doesn't seem like a usual character for an action film. The character is wearing a suit which shows he may be in a high class job, however he has a very small gun in his hand which signifies that the film is a comedy. There are a variety of colours in this poster which tells the audience that there will be loads of action scenes in the film.
